Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the clinical significance and expression of IFN-α and S100B proteins levels in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in children with viral encephalitis. Methods: Eighty children with viral encephalitis were selected as observation group from our hospital, and at the same time 50 healthy children were selected as control group. The levels of IFN-αand S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum were compared between the two groups. The levels of IFN-α and S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum were compared in different symptoms, phases and prognosis. Results: Compared with the control group, the levels of IFN-α and S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in observation group were significantly increased, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). The levels of IFN-αand S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in severe group were significantly higher than the mild group (P<0.01). The levels of IFN-α and S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in recovery phase were significantly lower than those in acute phase (P<0.01). The 1 year follow-up showed that the levels of IFN-α and S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum of children with poor prognosis were significantly higher than those with good prognosis (P<0.01). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the severe and acute phases were independent risk factors affecting the rise of IFN-α and S100B proteins levels (P<0.05). Conclusion: The changes of IFN-α and S100B proteins in cerebrospinal fluid and serum have important clinical value in the evaluation of the condition and prognosis of viral encephalitis.
