Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the role of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in the severity evaluation of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. Methods: A total of 62 children patients accordant with the CAP diagnosis standard (CAP group) and a total of 57 healthy children accordant with medical examination (control group) were selected as research objects. According to patients’ condition, the CAP group were further divided into the severe group (28 cases) and the mild group (34 cases). The levels of serum CRP and PCT were detected and analyzed. Results: The levels of serum CRP and PCT in the CAP children were significantly higher than that in the healthy children (t was 8.736, 9.251, P<0.01); the level of PCT in children with severe CAP was obviously higher than that in children with mild CAP (t=8.976, P<0.01), while the level of CRP was not significantly different between children with severe CAP and children with mild CAP (t=0.896, P>0.05). Conclusion: The levels of serum CRP and PCT both rise obviously in CAP children, but PCT is a better indicator than CRP in the severity evaluation in children with CAP.
